Pagosa Springs may be a small mountain town, but it has a plethora of fine musicians.
For lovers of live music, we have teamed the Pagosa Center for the Arts (PSCA) with some of Pagosa’s finest musicians for the Acoustic Duets Benefit Concert this Wednesday, July 20, 7-9 p.m..
Acoustic Duets was conceived as a fund-raiser for PSCA to provide additional stage lighting for The Breaks Black Box Theatre, where the concert will be held. If you’ve been to any of the three productions held in the theater (“Fully Committed,” “Brilliant Traces,” and the current production “Sylvia”) then you already know what an incredible space it is, and how perfect it will be for acoustic music duos to perform.
If you haven’t been to The Breaks Black Box Theatre, then you are in for a treat. FYI, “Black Box” is a term used to describe a versatile performance space with moveable and removable seating. The Breaks (named after The Breaks ranch owned by PSCA Director Laura Moore’s family) Black Box is an intimate 144-seat theater with platform seating on three sides of the stage. All seats are very close to the stage, comfortable, and with excellent sight lines.
In addition, you can enjoy your glass of wine or beer or soda as you watch the concert from your seat.
Most important to the performing musicians is the state-of-the-art sound system installed in the theater that will allow them to sound better than you’ve ever heard them in a non-concert venue.
This is an exciting opportunity not only for PSCA’s Tim and Laura Moore to raise funds for additional stage lighting, but also for the musicians who rarely, if ever, have the opportunity to perform in a concert setting.
Each duo includes two singers and talented instrumentalists, so you can expect a full night of vocal and instrumental performance, harmony, and familiar covers as well as original material.
All involved with Acoustic Duets, including the musicians, are donating their time and talent.
Those performing at the Acoustic Duets concert are:
Laith Scherer (lead vocalist for the rock band Bixby) and Bethany Burnett, both from Pagosa High’s Americana Project;
Jared Payne (formerly of the Hot Strings) and David Richter;
Eli Carpenter and Jess Wilton (of the Big’ns);
Carl Mori and Robbie Pepper (Dirty Martinis);
Diane and Michael Killen (the nationally touring band The Killens)
Greg Milioto and Bill Hudson (BBQ Boys).
The irreverent Mark Brown is Master of Ceremonies for Acoustic Duets, so there won’t be a dull moment between duos. Shout your drink order from your seat. Mark will take care of it.
The Breaks Black Box Theatre is located at the Pagosa Springs for the Arts, 2313 Eagle Drive (on Put Hill).
Doors open at 6 p.m. Enjoy the art gallery, musicians’ displays, and the beverage bar.
Tickets for the July 20 Acoustic Duets are $10, available at 731-SHOW, www.pagosacenter.org, the Chamber of Commerce, and at the door.
