St. Patrick’s Shamrock Festival quilt ready for auction

Each year the quilters at St. Patrick’s Episcopal church consolidate their well-trained talents and produce a magnificent quilt to raffle at the annual St. Patrick’s Shamrock Festival.

This year’s quilt, called “Pagosa Peaks,” is a queen-sized beauty complete with matching pillow shams. The colors represent the gorgeous rusts, greens, reds, and blues, we enjoy in this area and would be a prized work of art on any bed in town. The money that is made from the raffle goes toward area non-profit groups, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Pregnancy Center, Seeds of Learning, the Youth Center, among others. The cost of the quilt tickets are a very low $1, with a book of 12 tickets for only $10. The drawing will take place at St. Patrick’s Shamrock Festival on Aug. 13.

The raffle quilt is made by a group of women who meet every week to make prayer quilts. These quilts are prayed over while they are being made, placed on the altar of the church on Sunday morning and prayed over by the entire congregation. Then the quilts are taken to the parish hall and individual parishioners say a prayer for the recipient and tie a knot in a thread sewn into the quilt, representing the prayers. These prayer quilts are requested by members of the parish for someone who is struggling with health or personal issues and are sent literally all over the world. Each quilt is unique and filled with prayers of comfort and love. The raffle quilt is also prayed over, that it will bring joy to its recipient and will provide the funding so desperately needed by Pagosa area non-profit organizations. Last year’s quilt brought in over five thousand dollars and it is their hope that this year’s quilt will bring even more.

This year’s Shamrock Festival will begin on Friday evening, Aug. 12, with an evening of theater provided by Music Boosters, wine and cheese, and an auction preview. On Saturday, Aug. 13, the day will include a huge yard sale, followed that evening with a dinner under the tent with live music provided by Lead Foot Ruthie, and a silent auction. This greatly anticipated event is an annual festival put on by St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church. All the proceeds are disbursed to area organizations to help local outreach. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

To purchase a raffle ticket or inquire about the festival, call 731-5801 or visit St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church office at 225 S. Pagosa Blvd. Or you can go online at and see a photo of the quilt and download the order form. Many St. Patrick’s parishioners also have tickets available to sell.
