The Pagosa Lakes Porpoises Swim Team traveled to Gunnison last weekend to swim against other teams in the Western Slope League, including Salida, Grand Junction and Montrose.
Savannah Unger, Keanan Anderson, Owen Sutton, Katie Armbrecht, Austin Miller and Dane Murdock represented the Porpoises in the season’s first competition.
Savannah Unger, age 9, performed well in her swimming debut. Unger competed in the 50-yard freestyle, the 50 breaststroke, and the 50- and 100-yard backstroke events.
Keanan Anderson (11 years old) swam the 50 and 100 free, the 50 and 100 backstroke, and the 100 and 200 IM. Anderson improved in every event from last season, particularly in the breaststroke events, placing fifth in the 100 with a time of 1 minute 56.66 seconds.
Owen Sutton also competed in the Boys 11-12 division, swimming the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle events, the 50 and 100 backstroke, the 50 breaststroke, the 50 butterfly, and the 200 IM. Sutton qualified for the Seasonal State Championships in the 100 backstroke, placing fourth with a time of 1:32.46.
Katie Armbrecht, age 16, dominated the Girls 15 and Over Division, placing first in the 50, 100, 200 and 1,000 free, the 100 back, the 100 breaststroke, the 100 butterfly and the 200 IM.
Austin Miller (17) also placed first in each event he swam: the 50, 100, and 200 freestyle, 100 and 200 back, 100 breaststroke, 100 and the 200 butterfly.
Dane Murdock (16) joined his teammate in all the freestyle and backstroke events, placing second in each. Murdock placed first in the 200 breaststroke.
The Porpoises travel to Cortez to compete this weekend.
