A Pagosa Springs resident was killed early last Thursday morning in a single-vehicle rollover accident on U.S. 160 at mile marker 125.1 near Chimney Rock.
According to Colorado State Patrol spokesman Doug Wiersma, 23-year-old James E. Guyton was westbound on U.S. 160 when the 1988 Jeep Cherokee he was driving left the right side of the road at 6:50 a.m. Thursday morning and rolled twice. The unrestrained Guyton was partially ejected from the vehicle.
Archuleta County Coroner Carl Macht was called to the scene and pronounced Guyton dead at the scene.
According to Wiersma, the portion of road where Guyton’s vehicle rolled over — just west of Chimney Rock where the highway curves left — has been the scene of numerous accidents in past years and the trooper advised drivers to exert extra caution when navigating that section of the roadway.
As of press time Wednesday, the accident was still under investigation.
