Richard and Debbie Love to teach West Coast Swing workshop

Love in Pagosa.

Given this title, perhaps you thought you would find an article about maintaining or beginning a loving relationship. In reality, this is an article about an upcoming opportunity to learn contemporary west coast swing dance moves and phrasing from Richard and Debbie Love.

On June 4, Let’s Dance Club will host the Loves, who are nationally certified, and locally loved, dance instructors. Richard and Debbie once lived in Pagosa Springs, where they started the local dance club in 2000.

The Loves danced competitively for several years. Once their trophy case was filled, they wanted to share dance with others through teaching. They now own and operate Dancing with Love.

Although they moved to Colorado Springs in 2003, Richard and Debbie return annually for a week to Pagosa Springs to share their teaching with us. They specialize in teaching ballroom, swing, Latin, and nightclub dance. They understand how to teach adults because they also learned to dance as adults.

One of the most popular club dances from cowboy bars to posh night clubs, West Coast Swing can be danced to anything — old and new country, blues, classic rock, Motown and hip-hop. The dance can be sultry and sassy.

On Saturday, June 4, from 2 to 4:30 p.m., the Loves will lead a West Coast Swing workshop for those dancers whose experience with the dance ranges from the advanced beginner to experienced dancer. It is best to arrive at 1:45 p.m. to register, so you’re ready to start dancing at 2 Cost for the workshop is $20 per person.

Following a dinner break, there will be a free social dance for adults from 7 to 9 p.m. (or later). You are welcome to come to the evening dance whether or not you participate in the workshop. We will be dancing to a variety of recorded music, with something for everyone. Feel free to bring your own refreshments.

If you need to develop or brush up on your West Coast Swing dancing, Let’s Dance Club will be working on the dance on Tuesday evenings during May (except Tuesday, May 31), from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Pagosa Lakes Clubhouse at 230 Port Ave. There is no charge, however donations are welcome.

On Tuesday, May 31, from 7 to 9 p.m., the Loves will teach a fundamental rumba class during the weekly Let’s Dance meeting at the Pagosa Lakes (PLPOA) Clubhouse. There will be a $5 charge per person for this class.

All of these events will be held at the PLPOA Clubhouse at 230 Port Ave.
