High Country Squares host community square dance

Have you ever yearned to Dosado your Partner and Left Allemande your Corner? How about Shoot the Star and Box the Gnat? Don’t forget to Flutterwheel.

These are some of the colorful names of square dance calls you will learn in a beginner’s class. If you want a taste of what square dance entails, the High Country Squares have just the event for you — on Friday, June 3.

Be our guests for a free community square dance with pie and ice cream social on Friday, June 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the PLPOA Clubhouse at 230 Port Ave. We invite anyone in the community to attend this introduction to Modern Western Square Dance with our caller Jim Park. Come on down and learn some of our basic calls, have lots of fun and desserts and socialize with the wonderfully friendly square dancers of Pagosa Springs.

Using this community dance as an introduction, we encourage Pagosans to then join in our annual beginners’ class starting Monday, June 6, 6:30 to 8 p.m. with our club caller Jim Park doing the teaching. Each class is $4 per person. The only requirement is to bring your left and right feet, your enthusiasm, and your sense of humor. Jim Park has been calling square dancing for 36 years and is a great resource in our dance-friendly community. He will gently guide beginners through the basics of square dancing and get everyone dancing and having fun right away.

You will enjoy the benefits physical exercise, mental stimulation, and social contact: all important to your health. But the most important thing is it’s fun. It’s a chance to laugh and fool around ... and learn something new at the same time. Once you’ve learned the square dance language, you can go anywhere there’s square dancing and join in. It’s a worldwide activity.

The High Country Squares offers weekly dances, regional dances and a wonderful sense of community for local and visiting dancers. Contact Lorna at 731-5525 for more information.
