Closing in on important dates, deadlines

The Chamber of Commerce has been busy working on a number of projects that are coming to fruition during the month of May. The Business to Business Expo and a new Chamber website will be rolled out to the community.

Business owners and managers interested in displaying their wares, services or products are encouraged to attend the inaugural business expo Friday, May 13, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Pagosa Lodge. For only $25 a booth, you can let other businesses know what services you have available. If you are looking for services such as insurance, graphic or website design, credit card processing, wholesale product sales, office equipment and rental, business advice and so much more, you should attend and find out about the products and services that Pagosa has to offer.

There will be time for each business representative to talk about their business and what they have to offer. The event admission is free; there will be door prizes, an hors d’oeuvres reception with a cash bar, and a celebration of those businesses that took the time and made the effort to apply for the Town Tax Rebate Credit Program. The event is open to the public, but we encourage all business owners to stop by for a quick Friday evening after-hours event. This expo will be fast paced, fun and very informative. To register for the show, contact the Chamber or check your last newsletter for a registration form. We look forward to seeing the public and the business reps. It is more important now than ever to keep your dollars in our community.

Also, sometime during the middle of May, the Chamber will be rolling out the new website. Since splitting the visitor site with the Chamber site, we needed to create a more vibrant and robust website for ourselves and for Chamber members. The Chamber has secured the data base services of WebLink, a powerhouse in the Chamber data base industry. This website will be easy to navigate, contain pertinent business information, and serve as an excellent business directory. Members will be able to sign up online as a new member, renew online and pay for these options online. The general public will be able to purchase tickets for Chamber events, including the annual meeting, ColorFest, or the Business Expo. We are very excited to roll out this new amenity and hope to have it on display at the Business to Business Expo. We will host a number of training sessions in the upcoming weeks, so please set time aside to attend or have a key staff person attend one of the informative sessions.

Finally, the Chamber, in conjunction with The SUN, will introduce a Relocation and Resource Guide close to a July 1 delivery date. The opportunity to place an ad is coming to a close today, May 5. We are very sensitive to the advertising requests that are available in the community. We encourage you to look at the quality of the product, the target market audience and your budget and determine if this is the right product for your business. We have waited a long time to put together a quality product that encourages people to relocate to Pagosa Springs. We need to communicate that we are “Open for Business” (the Chamber’s tag line this year) and we need to do so with a informational guide that sheds a positive light on Pagosa. After an RFP process, The SUN was chosen and with their award-winning work on the Visitor Guide, we are confident an excellent product will be produced just in time for the busy tourist season. For more information about the Relocation and Resource Guide, contact The SUN at 264-2100.

Car and motorcycle show

With warmer weather on the horizon, special events are gearing up for the spring and summer months. Kicking off the event season is the third annual San Juan River Rod Run Car and Motorcycle Show slated for May 20-22.

Vehicles begin arriving on Friday and will gather for a fun meet and greet at the Pagosa Lodge beginning around 5 p.m. People driving to the west side of town will get a taste of the classic cars and motorcycles that will be in the Show and Shine on Saturday.

The Show and Shine will commence at 9 a.m. on historic Lewis Street and last until about 2 p.m. after which most of the awards will be presented. There are over 14 categories in which car and motorcycle owners can win awards. Throughout the day, there will be food vendors and product vendors with displays on Lewis Street, and live music by The Killens. There will be a beer garden with the return of the specially crafted beer for this event, the Classic Pilsner, by Pagosa Brewing. In the afternoon, car show participants will have some time to gather and relax.

On Sunday, May 22, Rod Run participants will gather at the Plaza Grille for breakfast and special awards ceremony. This is another opportunity to see some of the vehicles if you missed the Saturday show. After the awards ceremony, at about 10:30 a.m., participants will cruise through town, up to Treasure Falls and then head their separate ways. If not at church, bring the family downtown to watch the cruise and cheer the participants on with encouragement to return again next year.

River festival

The Rapids and Rhythms River Festival will be held on the same weekend as the car show.

We are excited this event is being held that weekend — it gives people even more reason to come to Pagosa and stay over for the weekend of May 20-22.

To celebrate the new river features in the Town Park area, there will be a white water rodeo, water events and races. There will be food vendors at Town Park and live music until the evening hours. Residents and visitors alike can wander from one event to the other in the downtown area, then visit the shops in town. After the car show, car show attendees can have some fun after being by their vehicle all day, cool off in Town Park and enjoy the live music. For more information about the River Festival, visit the GECKO website at

Home and Garden Show

One more event will take place the weekend of May 21-22 — the Home and Garden Show. Located at the high school, this annual event showcases building improvements, landscaping, home amenities and new construction. If you have been in the market for a project or would like to see an idea come to fruition, then stop by the show on Saturday, May 21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 22, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

We would like to remind everyone there will be a ribbon cutting at the Old Town Market on Friday, May 6, at 11 a.m. Welcome our newest downtown business and enjoy organic foods and natural products in a convenient location.

We have quite a few renewals to welcome back this week: RE/MAX Realty with Jim and Deneice Stacy; Regal Pines Real Estate with Dawn and Chris Truax; Kim Moore with Exit Realty Advantage Pagosa; Bank of the San Juans; Dayspring Chiropractic; At Your Disposal; Solid Management Disaster and Restoration Services; Bill Van Gundy with Ute Country Homes; Larry Williams Photography and Design; the San Juan Mountain Association; the American Postal Workers Union; and Mild to Wild Rafting. And, finally, we welcome Friend of the Chamber Mary Sealy.
