More than 600 community members made a wise choice and took advantage of free and low-cost health screenings at the annual 9Health Fair on April 2
A new test available this year was Vitamin D screening. According to recent news reports, approximately a third of Americans are Vitamin D deficient, which can lead to serious health conditions. Over 100 fair attendees opted to include this screening as part of their effort to take an active role in their health.
Though most everyone who attended the health fair had blood work done, others simply took advantage of optional screenings such as hearing, vision, oral, height and weight, and breast exam.
There were also Interactive Education Centers such as Veterans Services, SHARE (a research study looking at the lives of breast cancer survivors living in rural Colorado), and Archuleta County Victim Assistance Program. A popular station was Colorado State Trooper Doug Wiersma’s challenge to participants to see how well. or if. they could maintain control of a car going 60 mph, while reading and answering a text message. It was hard to the point of impossible!
If you were unable to attend this year’s fair in Pagosa Springs, log on to www.9healthfair.org to find another location that will work for you. While optional screenings and IECS will vary by location — all are dependent upon volunteers — blood tests are available at all 9Health Fairs.
