Entertainment, family style: 2011 Summer Family Comedy Series

If it’s the stand-up’s responsibility to uncover the overlooked humor in our ever-frantic daily lives, join the comedy stage at the Pagosa Springs High School Auditorium for three separate performances this summer as the planet’s funniest comedy stage comedians showcase their talents and captivate audiences young and old (or slightly aged!).

Life-size puppets, original comedy music, and lots of audience participation make these three performances must-see shows. Of the many talents who’ve worked on the Pagosa Springs High School stage in recent years, Rusty Z, Jolly D, and Wayne and Wingnut will bring their personas, charisma, consistent humor and polish to the stage.

Act I presents hypnotist Rusty Z on June 18, followed by Act II stage comedian Jolly D on July 23, and ending with Act III ventriloquist Wayne and Wingnut on Aug. 13.

All shows start at 6 p.m. at the high school and are open to children, youth, adults and seniors (only humans allowed!).

Pre-event tickets go on sale April 7 at the Pagosa Springs Chamber of Commerce, Hart Construction, and 1st Southwest Bank. All Shows are $10 per person and $12 at the door. This price is bargain entertainment for the whole family. Group sales can be requested.

Proceeds from these shows benefit the Pagosa Springs High School Theater Department and the Pagosa Builders Association. Concessions will be provided by the Booster Club.

Now if you haven’t busted a gut, make a second date to see Comedian Jolly D on July 23 for a special adult show at the new Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts. Same ticket prices. Beer and wine will be available for this show only.

Rusty Z-The Hypno-Hipster

After a successful 15-year career as a stand-up comedian (appearing on such television shows as A&E’s An Evening at the Improv and The Dennis Miller Show) James R. Zingelman decided to switch gears (and persona) and do stage hypnosis acts. He studied both stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy with some of the best instructors in the field. James is a certified member of the National Guild of Hypnotists. Using the alias Rusty Z, James has been putting volunteers to sleep and bringing out their hidden talents on stages across the United States. Rusty Z’s mastery of rapid hypnotic inductions and his comedic background, not to mention his groovy-hipster stage presence, put him a cut above the usual stage hypnosis demonstration. Rusty Z is always in good taste and no one is embarrassed, except maybe the skeptics who didn’t “believe” in hypnotism at the start of the show.

The Jolly Demis Experience

Jolly Demis earned his namesake the day he was born. “This is the jolliest baby I’ve ever delivered,” the doctor said. Jolly incorporates both music and comedy in his shows, as well as an uncanny ability to involve any audience in the act. He has opened for various heavyweights such as Lee Greenwood, Mario Lopez, Three Dog Night, Bill Engvall of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, and “NYPD Blue” and “La Bamba” star, Esai Morales. Demis’ comedic versatility and showmanship make him the consummate entertainer. Jolly is at his creative best during live performances, in which he wastes no time endearing himself to every audience. Jolly has the unique ability to find hilarity in all aspects of life and enable audiences to laugh at themselves with him.

Ventriloquist: Wayne and Wingnut

Let Wayne and Wingnut barnstorm their way into your heart with “life-sized” characters and life-sized laughs. Pagosa Springs could not be in better hands. Combining solid vocals with a washboard, harmonica, a guitar and an hilarious character named Wingnut, this act is the perfect crossover between music variety and family comedy. As each character is unleashed, the audience at Pagosa Springs High School will willingly leave reality and take a trip on the wings of Wayne’s imagination. You will experience big comedy, voices, songs, audience involvement, costuming, sound/lighting all rolled into one big ball of spontaneous fun. His show earned the name, “Puppet Loco,” because it’s crazy fun! Wayne Francis and Wingnut have worked many different venues. They have been around the world four times entertaining on cruise ships, spent a season in Branson Missouri in a 4,000-seat theater, headlined comedy clubs, worked their way through fairs, festivals, theme parks and several production shows. Wayne is absolutely phenomenal. Children and parents will have a wonderful time!.
