Lifelong Learning Lecture Series: Ethics, what’s the big deal?

The spring 2011 Lifelong Learning Lecture Series begins this Sunday, March 13 with a thought-provoking lecture called “The Ethics of Beauty,” by Katherine Burgess, an instructor at Southwest Colorado Community College.

Burgess poses this idea to lecture attendees: Many politicians and pundits decry the loss of a moral foundation in our country, often attributing it to the declining influence of religious moral principles as our society becomes increasingly secularized. Can we find a basis for ethical behavior that is not dependent upon divine punishment but finds its motivation in human happiness and well-being?

Burgess will examine a possible answer to this question.

”Lifelong Learning Lectures are free and open to the public. They are held in the Turner Reading Room from 3 to 4:15 p.m. in the Ruby Sisson Library, located on the corner of U.S. 160 and 8th Street. The doors will open at 2:45 p.m. so please arrive promptly. Also note that the library is closed during the lectures.
