‘Pagosa Paw’ winter dog nordic sports event

The Pagosa Nordic Club and Colorado Mountain Mushers bring dog sled races back to Pagosa Springs with the first-ever “Pagosa Paw” winter dog Nordic sports event.

Races include dog sledding, ski-jouring (dog pulls you on skis) and cani-cross (dog pulls you on snowshoes). There will be short courses for beginners and serious races for the big dogs, with prizes for all.

Racing starts at 9 a.m. sharp both Saturday and Sunday, March 12-13, at the West Fork cross country ski trailhead, Forest Service Road 648, located 12.5 miles east on U.S.160 from Pagosa Springs.

Pre-registration is required with or call Jennifer at 264-9358 for more information.

The cani-cross is a perfect race for newcomers and beginners. Extra harnesses are available for those just starting; just call Jennifer ahead of time.

All participating and spectating dogs must be friendly and leashed at all times.

Mark your calendars for this exciting new Pagosa Springs race event. Come on out for a dog-gone good time!

WinterFest races

The Pagosa Nordic Club hosted the second-ever Winter Fest Nordic ski races Feb.18-20, featuring both skate ski and classic cross country ski race events with individual and combined race scores.

A total of 45 racers took part in the three-day event, a 20-percent increase in participation over last year’s race weekend.

The most popular race this year was the newly-added biathlon in which cross country ski racers shoot at targets with air soft guns for points in between ski laps.

Races also included the new youth races on Friday, in which elementary and junior high students made their way around the ski loop at the elementary school. Adult events included fast-paced sprint races, team relay races and distance races.

The Pagosa Nordic Club thanks David and Liz Kuhn for the use of their ranch for the Saturday and Sunday races. The ranch provided and exceptional 5K loop course for racers, and spectators enjoyed the full view of the wide-open course with incredible mountain vistas.

The Pagosa Nordic Club also thanks the numerous volunteers who made this race possible. Race results are available at PagosaNordic.Com.

The Pagosa Nordic Club is a nonprofit, 100-percent volunteer organization with a mission, “To enhance winter recreational opportunities in Pagosa Springs by maintaining accessible groomed winter trails for skate skiing, classic cross country skiing and snowshoeing for all ability levels and to encourage and promote the use of these winter trails through education, marketing and events.
