“Magical Mountain Village,” a Pagosa community showcase concert, takes place Friday, March 25, at The Ross Aragon Community Center.
The concert features the music of John Graves, The Gypsy Moon Ensemble, Randall Davis, Larry Elginer, Carl Mori, Bob Nordmann, Laith Scherer, The Big ’Ns and The Pagosa Village Dancers.
A pre-concert social begins at 6: p.m. with live music, free desserts, snacks and coffee, and a beer and wine cash bar. Please bring desserts and snacks to share for the pre-concert social and intermission. The concert begins at 7.
The soundtrack of Pagosa has a lot to do with the music of one man: John Graves. Graves’ piano artistry will be present during the show through his elegant jazz renditions, ragtime and boogie-woogie tunes, original scores and accompaniment.
As performer, producer, writer, consultant and mentor Graves has been a cornerstone in the Pagosa cultural scene since moving here in 1996 as emeritus professor of mass communication. Preceding his life in academe, Graves had a successful thirty-five year career in TV and film as an executive and producer.
Graves represents the last bastion of a golden era of American music — popular jazz standards of the first half of the 20th century. His creative contributions to our community have been enormous; enhancing the quality of life in our magical mountain village.
Concurrent with whatever else he happens to be doing Graves has always been a professional musician. As a child prodigy he was in the limelight performing on a Steinway grand piano for The Mickey Mouse Club shows at a movie theater that had once been a magnificent turn-of-the-century vaudeville theater in town of Porterville, California.
Graves’ Mickey Mouse Club gig remained a regular venue for him for several years. Later he performed as an accompanist to many of the most famous vocalists of the day — Judy Garland, Jimmy Durante, Rosemary Clooney and many others. Graves has performed, prolifically, as a soloist and as a member of many distinguished jazz ensembles.
Join John Graves and a cast of performers who reflect some of Pagosa’s diverse artistic talent at “Magical Mountain Village.”
