Thievery at The Springs Resort continues, this time with one man arrested for robbery and the stolen property recovered.
On Saturday night, Jan. 8, two victims reported to Resort staff that, between the two of them, two pairs of shoes and a pair of shorts had been taken from the men’s locker room, said Det. Scott Maxwell of the Pagosa Springs Police Department.
According to Maxwell, following the report, at about 11:45 p.m., Resort staff began their nightly practice opening of the lockers to check for left-behind property, this time accompanied by the one of the victims.
The employee asked one man, later identified as the suspect, if his locker could be open — a request the man initially refused but later allowed.
The suspect was later identified as Bradley Johnson, 27, of Dayton, Ohio.
Upon the opening of the locker, the victim recognized the shoes and the two asked if a bag in the locker could be opened. Johnson replied that it could not be opened.
The employee and victim returned to the lobby to call the police, at which time Maxwell said a witness saw Johnson placing the shoes in the bag.
The suspect then attempted to leave the premises despite warnings from the staff and victims that the police were being phoned.
Johnson took off running, followed by one of the victims.
While running across the parking lot, Maxwell said the suspect threw one of the stolen shoes.
The victim caught up with Johnson in front of Goodman’s Department Store, where the suspect was trying to shove the property down a storm drain.
The victim confronted Johnson and a short scuffle ensued, with the suspect attempting to punch the victim, Maxwell said. The attempted punch escalates the incident from theft to robbery.
Johnson then ran from the victim again.
Following the incident, Officer Kirk Hioki located Johnson at the Pagosa Bar, at which point he was taken into custody and booked into the Archuleta County Detention Center for robbery and theft, Maxwell said.
