“Pagosa Sounds,” a concert showcasing an all-star cast of local musicians, takes place at 7 p.m., Feb. 4, at The Ross Aragon Community Center.
A pre-concert social, with live music, free coffee and a beer and wine cash bar begins at 6 p.m. Please bring desserts and snacks to share, if you wish.
Featuring outstanding vocalists and musicians — including Johnny K, Natalie Oman, Larry Elginer, Carla Roberts, John Graves, Samantha Hunts, Jessica Peterson, June Marquez and Paul Roberts — Pagosa Sounds is part of a community concert series sponsored by the community center and Elation Center for the Arts.
Paul Roberts, a 15-year resident of Pagosa Springs, has been instrumental in developing this successful concert series. Roberts is president of Elation Center for the Arts, which co-sponsors of this series and which has sponsored community concerts and school music programs in Pagosa for many years.
Roberts has had a lifelong career in the music business as a performer, composer, music therapist and arts-in-education specialist. He began performing in his teens, during the folk music revival. Later, he traveled to India, where he studied sitar. In the ‘60s Roberts performed with Kate Taylor (sister of James Taylor) and Jon Landau (Bruce Springsteen’s manager/producer). For decades, he has performed at school concert assemblies and fine arts concerts with Carla Roberts, who is also on the bill for Pagosa Sounds.
Thriving on his effervescent fascination with various plucked string instruments, Roberts adopted the cello banjo, an unusual early American instrument from the late 1800s, which has only recently been resurrected from near extinction. The cello banjo was used to play bass parts in banjo orchestras. Roberts enjoys composing original works and arranging ancient melodies for the instrument.
Advance tickets are available at Higher Grounds and the community center, for $10. Tickets at the door are $12. Young people, 18 and under, are admitted free. The Ross Aragon Community Center located at 451 Hot Springs Blvd. For further information, call the community center at 264-4152.
