Police seek information in theft of handgun

A service handgun was stolen from the vehicle of an off-duty La Plata County Sheriff’s Deputy Christmas night in the parking lot of the Oak Ridge Lodge.

The deputy was passing through Pagosa Springs and staying at the hotel at the time of the incident, said Pagosa Springs Police Department Det. Scott Maxwell.

The deputy left a World War II-era Remington .45 semi-automatic handgun in the vehicle and thought he locked the vehicle, however, the weapon was stolen sometime after 10:30 p.m. and no forced entry to the vehicle was found, Maxwell said.

The gun, now considered an antique, was valued at about $1,000, while a leather shoulder holster also taken from the vehicle was valued at $120.

Maxwell said the PSPD has no leads on the case.

Anyone with information should call Maxwell at 264-454, Ext. 241.
