Christmas tree recycling to begin, new drop-off location

The Town of Pagosa Springs will once again conduct a Christmas Tree recycling program.

Trees to be recycled can be dropped off at a newly-designated site at the south end of South Fifth Street any time between now and the end of March.

Look for the signs directing recyclers to the collection area.

The parks department asks that recyclers remove all lights, tinsel and ornaments before leaving trees. The parks department will chip the collected trees into mulch to be used for various landscaping projects in the town parks during the coming season.

Thank you for participating in this worthwhile undertaking; for more information, call the parks office at 264-4151, Ext. 233.

Skate pond

The skate pond behind the River Center is open for the season, but recent warm weather and rains have adversely affected the skating surface.

The skate pond’s hours of operation are from dawn to 10 p.m. every day, except during the nights when ice-maintenance operations are being performed.

Resurfacing of the ice will be scheduled for Monday and Thursday evenings unless weather conditions keep the work from taking place. On those nights, the pond will be closed at 6 p.m.

A minimum ice thickness of four inches will be regularly monitored, but thin spots can occur, and an effort to mark them with orange safety cones will be made. Pond users are requested to leave the safety cones in place.

We also ask that no foreign objects be thrown onto the ice. The pond will remain open until safety concerns require its closure. Enjoy the ice.

Youth basketball

Registration for the upcoming 9- and 10-year-old and 11- and 12-year-old youth basketball leagues has closed and assessment dates will be announced before the end of the year (the assessments will not take place until the first week of January).

Late registrations will be accepted, but late registrants will now be placed on a waiting list and be placed on teams only if participants who registered before the deadline opt out of the program.

Coaches and team sponsors for these divisions are still needed. Cost for sponsorship is $150, which includes sponsor’s name on team uniforms, commemorative plaque with team picture and recognition in media articles.

For more information call 264-4151, Ext. 231 or 232.

Cross country skiing

Once enough snow falls, the Town of Pagosa Springs will again be able to provide quality cross country skiing opportunities this winter, thanks to the efforts of the Pagosa Nordic Club.

Throughout the winter, these generous volunteers will be undertaking the grooming of cross country skiing trails in the downtown area for the use of our citizens and visitors.

The trails will be located at Yamaguchi Park on South 5th Street, on Reservoir Hill, and at the athletics field in Town Park on Hermosa Street. Access to the Reservoir Hill trails is from San Juan Street, adjacent to the Spa Motel, or from Spring Street, which heads up the hill from the south side of the Post Office off Hot Springs Boulevard.

Other cross country trails groomed by this group are located at a variety of locations around the area. Information regarding those trails, as well as grooming reports and trail conditions, is available at the club’s website, pagosanordic.com.
