“A Classic Christmas” is a joyful concert of heartwarming holiday songs and elegant classical music at 7 p.m., tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 17, at The Ross Aragon Community Center.
A pre-concert social with live music begins at 6 p.m.
Bringing together families and friends to share conviviality and goodwill, “A Classic Christmas” has been a memorable tradition in Pagosa for the past several years.
Performers for “A Classic Christmas” include Larry Elginer, Mark DeVoti, John Graves, June Marquez, Bob Nordmann, Sally Neel, Matthew and Tiffany Brunson, Johnny K, Natalie Oman, Heidi Tanner, Jean Smith, Jessica Espinoza and Michael Joseph Thomas.
“Music is such a creative force; it reaches the soul,” says Larry Elginer, one of the outstanding performers, and emcee, for the program.
“For me, the passion for playing music has always been very strong,” says Elginer who, for 38 years, directed one of the top-ranking school music programs in the U.S. before moving to Pagosa. Possessing the astounding ability to teach all orchestra and band instruments, Elginer has devoted his life to conducting and performing with concert bands, orchestras, jazz bands and choirs.
“I really feel strongly about music,” says Elginer.
A child prodigy, Elginer’s music took off, in the fast track, after a trumpet solo he performed at age 11 in Greeley, Colo. Elginer’s enormous creative talents are now such a boon to the local cultural scene. He conducts the Pagosa Springs Community Choir, plays the trumpet and sings in the popular jazz quartet, John Graves and Friends.
“I feel that music has so much to offer in our lives,” he says, “whether it’s through the schools, or after school — professionally or recreationally.”
