Poster and essay contest winners announced

As part of its continuing anti-litter campaign, the Town of Pagosa Springs recently invited local students in grades K-eight to enter the 2010 “Pick-up Pagosa Country” poster and essay contests.

Thanks to the cooperation of the elementary, intermediate and junior high schools, the town parks and recreation office received and judged entries from over 200 students.

Entrants were asked to focus on the impacts of litter and importance of recycling in our community. Children in grades K-four were asked to submit entries in the poster contest, while children in grades five through eight were asked to enter the essay contest.

All of the students are commended for their hard work, creativity and participation, and the following students are recognized for submitting entries which garnered top honors in their respective contests.

In the poster contest, we recognize Hannah Rockensock for earning first place in the kindergarten bracket, Carolyn Foster for taking the top spot in first grade, and Larissa Frisby for producing the first-place poster in second grade. In third grade, the top spot went to Hope Weber, while Rico Montoya took first place in fourth grade.

The overall winner of the essay contest was Leroy Black, a seventh-grader who wrote the top essay among all entrants in grades 5-8.

Each of the above-mentioned students will receive a certificate of award for their entries on behalf of Mayor Ross Aragon’s Green Ribbon Panel on Litter Awareness and Education.

The parks and recreation office would again like to thank all of the administrators, teachers, parents and students who helped make this year’s “Pick-up Pagosa Country” contests a success.
