Youth volleyball season is over, basketball to begin

This year’s youth volleyball season drew to a close Nov. 17, and the recreation department staff would like to congratulate the 11-12 Gray team for earning top honors in its division.

We would also like to recognize this year’s coaches and sponsors for their significant contributions to the success of this growing program. Without the voluntary efforts of the coaches and sponsors listed below, ensuring an instructional, enjoyable season would have been nearly impossible.

We thank Jennifer Pitcher, Stacie Lewis, Charmain Smith, Shane Lucero, Carol Nasralla, Kanaka Perea and Marky Egan for their commitment and dedication while coaching their respective teams.

In addition, we recognize San Juan Veterinary Hospital Inc., Concrete Connection of Pagosa Springs, Colorado Rock and Dirt Excavation, Pagosa Women’s Health and Wellness, and Design A Sign, whose business sponsorships greatly offset the cost of purchasing program equipment, uniforms and maintenance supplies.

In addition, we would like to thank all of the players and their parents and guardians for participating in this year’s program and accommodating a busy schedule; thanks again to all of you for your continued sportsmanship, dedication and support.

Youth basketball

Schedules for this year’s 7-8 youth basketball program are available in the recreation office in Town Hall and have also been posted on the recreation department page at

Due to the limited amount of gym space available during the holiday season, games in the 7-8 division will be played Monday-Thursday at either 5:30 or 6:25 p.m. through mid-December. All games will be played in the Ross Aragon Community Center gymnasium.

Registration for this year’s 9- and 10-year-old and 11- and 12-year-old youth basketball leagues will run through Wednesday, Dec. 15. Children who will be 9, 10, 11 or 12 years old as of Jan. 1, 2011 are eligible to register. The seasons will not begin until early January.

Registrations will be available at the recreation office in Town Hall and are also available online in Adobe format at (click on the town departments link, then the recreation link). Registrations will also be supplied to local schools after the Thanksgiving break; parents are reminded to return completed registrations to the recreation office.

Cost is $30 per player and $15 for each additional child in the same, immediate family who participates. Checks and money orders should be made payable to Town of Pagosa Springs.

Coaches and team sponsors for these divisions are needed and appreciated. Cost for sponsorship is $150, which includes sponsor’s name on team uniforms, commemorative plaque with team picture and recognition in media articles.

Disc golf

With the recent addition of another nine holes, the disc golf course on the south side of Reservoir Hill is now complete.

For as long as weather permits, veteran players and beginners alike can test their skills on the 18-hole course, which occupies roughly 10 acres on the hill’s southwest meadow. Players can access the course by taking Hot Springs Boulevard to Spring Street. From Spring Street, proceed on foot through the gate and look for the first hole on the north side of the meadow approximately one-quarter of a mile up the road. Tee boxes and baskets have been flagged for better visibility.

The recreation office is monitoring the use of the course, and would like to hear comments concerning this location from disc golfers and others who use Reservoir Hill for recreational purposes. Anyone wishing to comment can call the office at 264-4151, Ext. 232. Comments can also be e-mailed to
