A Classic Christmas set for community center

“A Classic Christmas” is a concert of heartwarming performances of traditional holiday songs and elegant classical music set for Dec. 17 at The Ross Aragon Community Center.

The concert is sponsored by the community center and Elation Center for the Arts.

A pre-concert social, with live music, begins at 6 p.m. The concert begins at 7. Free coffee and a beer and wine cash bar will be available throughout the evening. Please bring desserts and snacks to share, if you wish.

“A Classic Christmas” has been a memorable tradition in Pagosa for the past several years. Bringing together families and friends to share festivity and goodwill, the concert is a joyful holiday musical celebration, with a bevy of superbly talented musicians and singers. This year’s joyful holiday celebration features Larry Elginer, Bob Nordmann, Matthew and Tiffany Brunson, John Graves, Johnny K and Natalie Oman, June Marquez, Heidi Tanner and Mark DeVoti.

Mark DeVoti, a gifted singer and songwriter, will be one of the performers bringing together families and friends to share festivity and goodwill at “A Classic Christmas.”

DeVoti, who grew up in western Massachusetts, got a close-up view of the music business, in his younger years, going on tour with Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie in the official role as “baby bodyguard” — taking care of the performers’ children. DeVoti, himself, became a full-time professional musician when he moved to Steamboat Springs, Colo., in the mid-’80s.

Later, he and his wife, Erica, moved back to Massachusetts where DeVoti began his career in education. Returning to Colorado in the ’90s, DeVoti opened an alternative high school in Pagosa Springs, after which he worked as principal of Pagosa Springs Intermediate School; then became superintendent of Archuleta School District 50 Jt.

DeVoti’s band, Leadfoot Ruthie, (in which his son, Josh, is the drummer), is popular throughout the Four Corners region.

December embers, carols, icicles, stuffed stockings, tinsel, mistletoe, Santa, eggnog, visiting family and friends ... Christmas is a celebration that connects people across the globe. Connect with your community at “A Classic Christmas.”

Advance tickets to “A Classic Christmas”, for $10, will go on sale next week at Higher Grounds and the community center. Tickets at the door are $12. Young people, 18 and under, are admitted free. The Ross Aragon Community Center is located at 451 Hot Springs Blvd.
