The Archuleta County Veterans Service Office, working with the Pagosa Springs American Legion Post 108, would like to let our local veterans know about emergency cash assistance money we have available.
As we draw close to the holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas, hard economic times in our area become even more evident. It becomes increasingly important to let our vets and their immediate families know that we can help them with emergency assistance for such things as utilities, food, clothing, rent, travel, etc.
If you have need for emergency assistance, or know of a veteran or veteran’s family that has these needs, please contact this office at 264-4013. We may be able to help. All contacts in this regard are handled in strict confidentiality.
The money for this effort comes from the Colorado State Veterans Trust Fund. This is the same money we use for VA Health Care transportation assistance. We have set aside $6,000 from our Grant money for emergency situations.
We would ask that veterans or their families put together a request for assistance that includes actual billing statements, reason for need, and any other information that would help us in approving your need. You will need to apply in person to this office.
The money is available for a onetime need, with a suggested limit up to $250 per emergency assistance. We will consider multiple assistance needs on a case by case basis. In most cases assistance payments will be made directly to the billing party. Under no circumstances will money be paid to anyone for the purchase of alcohol or tobacco products. If the emergency is food related you should prepare a grocery shopping list and someone may accompany you to the grocery store and pay directly to that provider.
I suggest you call first for an appointment with this office to asses your emergency need. Please bring all of your information with you at the appointment for consideration.
