December embers, carols, icicles, stuffed stockings, tinsel, mistletoe, Santa, eggnog, visiting family and friends… Christmas is a celebration that connects people across the globe. Bringing together families and friends to share festivity and goodwill, “A Classic Christmas” has been a memorable tradition in Pagosa for several years.
This year’s joyful holiday celebration features music maestro Larry Elginer, who will share some of his many talents; along with Heidi Tanner, Bob Nordmann, Matthew and Tiffany Brunson, John Graves, Johnny K, Natalie Oman, June Marquez and others.
“I believe music encompasses our being,” says June Marquez. “It brings about peace, love and happiness.”
Marquez is one of the best female pop vocalists in the Southwest. She has deep roots in southwest Colorado: her great-great-grandfather Francisco Marquez, a Spaniard, settled in Rosa, N.M., in the late 1800s.
Inspired by her mother’s singing and dancing, Marquez began performing in her teens, when she sang with her six sisters in a group known as the Marquez Sisters, a popular ensemble that performed for weddings, parties and all kinds of social occasions.
During the 1970s, the Marquez family sponsored regular dances at their store, Marquez Grocery, in Arboles. These dances featured bands that played traditional ranchera music, and they provided an important cultural scene for the Hispanic community in Archuleta County.
“Christmas — that magic blanket that wraps itself about us, that something so intangible that it is like a fragrance,” wrote Augusta E. Rundel. “It may weave a spell of nostalgia. Christmas may be a day of feasting, or of prayer, but always it will be a day of remembrance - a day in which we think of everything we have ever loved.”
