Soups picked for Empty Bowls

As the final bowls are being finished for the Nov. 13 Empty Bowls event, soups and chili’s have been selected.

The menu will include a black bean chili, prepared by Tessie Garcia, one of the three art teachers organizing the event; a Creole soup prepared by Chanlor Humphrey ,a student working on her culinary credit; and a red meat chili prepared by Joanne Irons, who used to cater and now manages the Youth Center. Margaret Gallegos will prepare a wonderful posole. New this year is DJ’s Restaurant, donating homemade minestrone; and returning this year is Margaret Soniat with a homemade potato soup.

With the soups, diners will enjoy bread and their choice of ice tea, lemonade or coffee.

Doors at the high school will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and bowls will be available for purchase for $10, with some specially-designed bowls part of a silent auction.

All the proceeds from the event will go to our food banks in Pagosa Springs.

Art teachers Gail Hershey, Janet Knocke and Tessie Garcia have worked with members of the community making bowls with donated clay from New Mexico Clay. Come early to choose your bowls and support our local food banks.
