Tiny Treasures for the Holidays

The Pagosa Springs Arts Council will hold a holiday extravaganza showcasing Tiny Treasures for the Holidays, Nov. 4-7.

Any medium will be accepted. two-dimensional work is not to exceed 8x10 inches, (not including mat and frame); three-dimensional works should not exceed 10 inches in height, not counting pedestal.

Art of the American West

This exhibit of Art of the American West is strong and powerful, with a wide range, from intensely dominating pieces to soft, demure works.

Creativity pours forth from unique western embellished purses to Navajo beaded jewelry, handthrown pottery, pine needle basketry and photography, as well as watercolor, pencil, pastel, oil and felting, all adhering to the western theme.

The exhibit features over 50 pieces from the following artists: Randy Albers, Lavern Burton, Paula Devereaux, Claire Goldrick, Buster Griggs, Carrie Gruver, Syl Holly-Lobato, Jeanine Malaney, Susan Martin-Serra, Pierre Mion, Dee Pitchon, Carol Schneider, Kathleen Steventon, Rick Unger and Mary Walls.

You are bound to find something to enhance your boot-kickin’ life.

The Art of the American West exhibit is open to the public Tuesday-Thursday from noon-5 p.m. This exhibit will run until Oct. 5.

Collage art workshop

Join local artist Dee Pitchon in learning different techniques for the art of mixed media collage. You can either work on a canvas or be green and work on a recycled book and give it new life. So, start saving some interesting photos, advertisements and anything you would like to put in your art piece. Please make copies of any special items like photos or other special memorabilia. Supplies such as paints, stamps, papers, etc. will be available for use during the class. Your masterpiece will have its own charm and character.

The class will be held Saturday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

The cost is $95 for PSAC members and $120 for non-members. Please call 264-5020 to reserve your place in the class. Supplies to bring to class: canvas or a recycled book, photos, advertisements and memorabilia.

Lorraine Trenholm is back

Born in New York where she lived until completing studies as a painting major at Pratt Institute, Lorraine Trenholm has painted and drawn throughout her life. She painted and showed her art on Cape Cod depicting that area, the Southwest, animal artistry, doing pastels, oils and collage. She helped found the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, and was juried in as a Signature member its first year. A member of “21 in Truro,” Chatham Creative Arts Center, Pastel Society of NM and a Signature member of the Pastel Society of Colorado, she has won numerous awards and participated in several one woman shows. Her work has been published in Lois Griffel’s “Painting the Impressionist Landscape,” and ij Kennedy Publishing’s” Best of America-Pastel Artists and Artisans, Vol. 1.” Lorraine moved to Colorado in 2004 where she continues to show and do both studio and “plein air” painting, as well as teaches pastel and oil painting in Durango and through the Pagosa Springs Arts Council.

Beginner Pastels/Mark-making Workshop

What is pastel? Which kind do I like — hard or soft? What kind of support? Sanded or unsanded paper?

Mark-making: How do I put the pastel on the paper? Dry starts, wet starts or strokes? Finish — to fix or not to fix?

Students will need a set of pastels, paper, easel, backing board, paper towels, paint brushes, makeup sponges, Styrofoam peanuts and a spray bottle.

The instructor will provide two 9x12 pieces of Wallis Sanded paper and 2 pieces of unsanded paper (more will be available for purchase).

This class, led by Lorraine Trenholm, will be held Wednesday, Oct. 13, and Thursday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at The Studio, 450 Lewis St., third floor. There will be an optional day on Friday, Oct. 15.

Photo Club

The Photography Club meets the second Wednesday of each month during the club year from September through May at 6 p.m. at Artisans of the Southwest Gallery, 175 Pagosa St. Interested photography enthusiasts are welcome to attend at no charge for the first meeting. Plein Air Painters

Plein Air Painters Club offers a wonderful opportunity for artists and art enthusiasts alike to share tips, ideas and resources. Painters who work in any media are welcome. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. On Sept. 23 we will meet at the pond behind River Center. Parking is behind the shops. If the weather is nice, the group paints outdoors. If the weather is bad, the group paints in The Studio of the Lewis Building at 450 Lewis Street, third floor. Please call Jean Smith 264-6647 if you need more information.
