Storms hamper local women’s golf tournament

The Pagosa Springs Women’s Golf Association featured a “Par for a Day” format for their league day, Aug. 3. The ladies played all of the par four holes on the Meadows Piñon courses except Piñon No. 9. At the end of the round, the ladies tallied their scores for these nine holes and deducted one half of their handicaps for the adjusted aggregate score.

In the First Flight, Lynda Gillespie captured top honors with a 34.5; Julie Pressley was second with a 38; Cherry O’Donnell was third with a 38.5; and Audrey Johnson was fourth with a 39. Carrie Weisz won the Second Flight with a 32.5; Barb Lewis placed second with a 33; Lynne McCrudden was third with a 33.5; and Doe Stringer was fourth with a 36.5. In the Third Flight, Carole Howard was first with a 36; Sue Martin and Sheila Rogers tied for second, each with a 40; and Jane Baker and Donna Gregory tied for fourth, each with a 42.

The Pagosa Springs Golf Club and the PSWGA hosted the Southwest League’s team play event, Aug. 5.

Heavy rains, lightning and soggy course conditions shorted the competition to nine holes for the eight teams. According to the league’s rule for an incomplete round due to inclement weather, all holes not completed are halved between opponents. Team Captain Cherry O’Donnell said in all the years she’s been playing team play, she’s never remembered not completing a match play event. The Pagosa ladies garnered 38 points gross and 34 points net against the Kirtland Riverview Golf Club.

Participating for the Pagosa team were Jan Kilgore, Barbara Sanborn, Cherry O’Donnell, Audrey Johnson, Carrie Weisz, Kay McKee, Bev Hudson and Doe Stringer.

The next team play event is slated for Aug. 26 at Durango’s Hillcrest Golf Club.
