I’m sure over the year’s you’ve heard the saying “Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades,” or possibly you’ve even said it a few times.
Well, if you really want to know what close looks like, then head on down to the Archuleta County Fair on Saturday, Aug. 7, at 9 a.m. and enter yourself in the annual Horseshoe Tournament.
Mark Bergon and Cindy Halverson do a great job of managing this event at the fair each year. The first competition will be the Men’s and Women’s Doubles Tournament, then the Singles Tournament will follow.
Special trophies will be awarded to the winners and a good time is sure to be had by all.
There is no entry fee for the contest, just your gate fee for the fair. If you’re still left wondering about that expression ... in horseshoes, there are two ways to score: by throwing “ringers,” or by throwing the horseshoe nearest to the opposite stake.
So dust off those horseshoes and get some good throws in before the tournament. The South Park pits are open for practice sessions. See you at the fair!
