Porpoises compete at Pueblo swim meet

Eight members of the Pagosa Lakes Porpoises Swim Team competed last weekend in Pueblo.

Competition began Friday afternoon with Kelsea Anderson and Emily Bryant swimming the 200-meter individual medley.

Anderson placed 27th in the 15 and Over Division, while Bryant placed 11th in the 13-14 division.

Blake Irons, 12, also raced on Friday afternoon. Irons placed 11th in the 200 IM.

Zach Irons and Ben Miller competed in the Boys 11 and Over 50 freestyle. Irons finished in a time of 37.4, his personal best, while Miller finished in a time of 41.68.

Erika Pitcher joined her teammates in competition on Friday, swimming the 50 frees, along with Anderson and Bryant. The Friday session concluded with Pitcher finishing the 1,500-meter free in a time of 21.43.13, placing seventh.

Saturday morning’s competition began with Andie Miller, 12, swimming the 50 free in a time of 46.70. Keanan Anderson, 10, and Blake Irons also swam the 50 free, both swimming personal bests. The 50 breaststroke followed, with Miller placing 17th, Anderson placing 10th and Irons placing eighth. Anderson also swam the 100 backstroke, while Miller swam the 100 free. Blake Irons swam the 100 free and the 200 breaststroke, placing fifth in his age division.

The 13 and Over Division competed Saturday afternoon. Kelsea Anderson swam the 400 free, the 100 back and the 200 free. Pitcher competed in the 100 butterfly and the 200 free. Zach Irons finished the 100 fly. Bryant competed in the 100 back, 100 fly, and the 200 free, placing seventh, 12th and fourth respectively. Ben Miller, who competed in his first swim meet, swam the 100 back, the 200 free, and the 50 breaststroke.

The final day of competition began with the 12 and under swimmers, Keanan Anderson, Andie Miller and Blake Irons. Anderson swam in the 100 breaststroke and the 50 butterfly. He placed first in his heat in the 50 back, finishing with a time of 59.42 and beating the qualifying time for the Western Slope Championships. Miller swam the 200 free and the 50 back. Blake Irons finished 7th in the 100 breaststroke and 17th in the 50 fly. He dropped nearly four seconds in his 50 backs from his best time, finishing in 11th place.

Pitcher concluded her meet with a first place finish in the 200 fly, a third in the 50 fly and 28th in the 100 frees. Kelsea Anderson swam the 50 fly (13th), 100 free (35th) and the 50 back (fifth). Bryant swam all season bests, finishing fifth in both the 100 free and 50 back and eighth in the 200 back. Zach Irons placed 12th in the 50 fly and 32nd in the 100 free. Ben Miller swam the 100 free, finishing 14th, and the 50 back.

Another Porpoise, Owen Sutton, is visiting California where he competed in the 52nd annual Coronado Rough Water Swim. Sutton braved the chilly ocean water during the 400-yard event and finished first in the boys 9-10 age division.

The Porpoises travel to Montrose July 16-18 before heading to the Western Slope Championships in Grand Junction.
