Local resident Phyllis Hakes, 84, died in Pagosa Springs on Thursday, June 17, 2010.
Mrs. Hakes was born Dec. 23, 1925, to Feliciano and Josepha Valdez in Trujillo, Colo. She was one of eight children.
Phyllis chose nursing as her profession and worked for many years at Mercy Hospital in Durango, Colo. She and her husband, Bob, were married on Jan. 7, 1957, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, moved from Pagosa Springs for a period of time and returned in 1965 to settle here permanently.
She is survived by her sisters, Delphine McFatridge of Pagosa Springs and Arabella Martinez of Salt Lake City, Utah, and her brother Gene Valdez of Alamogordo, N.M.
She was preceded in death by sisters Rose Facker, Rachel Archuleta and Elisama Martinez ,and brother, Gilbert Valdez.
A memorial mass was celebrated June 22, 2010, at Immaculate Heart of March Catholic Church in Pagosa Springs.
