The second annual Safety Expo will be held Saturday, June 12, in the parking lot at Centerpoint Church.
There will be a little extra demonstration space used at the site when air ambulance helicopters from two agencies take part in Safety Expo displays.
Tri-State Care Flight will have an air ambulance helicopter arrive at and take off from the Centerpoint Church area. Come to the Safety Expo and you will be able to view the helicopter and see the high-tech medical and communication technology available, as well as talk to the pilots who fly these medical marvels.
San Juan Regional Medical Center will also have an AirCare helicopter on site, which they call a “hospital with wings.” This AirCare helicopter works just like another department in the hospital and staff observes strict hospital regulations. San Juan Regional Medical Center is a Level 3 trauma center and dispatches more than 500 flights per year to accident and emergency scenes. This Bell 222 carries the latest lifesaving equipment and both air ambulance services are staffed by highly-qualified paramedics and nurses.
The schedule of demonstrations will, of course, be at the mercy of any medical emergencies, but flight care is a fascinating aspect of the medical and safety world.
These air ambulances are just a part of the full Safety Expo that will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. Other important safety demonstrations will take place, in particular when a La Plata Electric crew performs a pole-top rescue, with the victim airlifted from the scene. Pagosa Fire Protection District personnel will perform a vehicle extrication with their victim also air transported. Members of the ground ambulance service (EMS) and Search and Rescue (including the dive team and backcountry rescue) will be available with exhibits and equipment.
Children and adults will have fun and gain a tremendous amount of knowledge at the Expo. We often take safety precautions for granted. Find out ahead of time how you can protect your family and your home, and how you can volunteer with one of the participating organizations.
Aspects of the Safety Expo change every year, so don’t miss this year’s exciting static displays and active demonstrations on Saturday, June 12. Learning safe practices can be fun!
