Club plans WinterFest Nordic ski races

The Pagosa Nordic Club will host the first-ever 2010 WinterFest Nordic ski races featuring classic cross-country ski and skate ski races, Feb. 12-15.

The weekend starts with race registration and check-in along with a pasta dinner special at Nello’s Bistro on Friday Feb. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. Registration is also available on the club’s Web page, PagosaNordic.Com

The Saturday, Feb. 13, event schedule includes a 9 a.m. 1 km fun race for all ages and abilities in Town Park; a 10 a.m. 5 km and 10 km skate ski and classic cross country ski race and 3 km snowshoe race on Reservoir Hill in downtown Pagosa Springs. An awards ceremony will be hosted at the Pagosa Brewery that afternoon at 3 p.m.

The Sunday, Feb. 14, event schedule includes a relay race with teams of two completing skate ski and classic ski laps. One team member will skate ski 3 km and their teammate will classic cross-country ski 3 km around the Yamaguchi Nordic Park in downtown Pagosa Springs at 10 a.m. Also, there will be a snowshoe/ski Disc Golf Tournament at 1 p.m. and a 3 p.m. hosted fun ski at the Coyote Hill Nordic Ski Trails.

On Monday, Feb. 15, the Pagosa Nordic Club will host a 10 a.m. fun ski at the West Fork Nordic Ski Trails.

The Pagosa Nordic Club is a nonprofit volunteer organization with a mission “To enhance winter recreational opportunities in Pagosa Springs by maintaining accessible groomed winter trails for skate skiing, classic cross country skiing & snowshoeing for all ability levels and to encourage and promote the use of these winter trails through education, marketing and events”.

The Pagosa Nordic Club (PNC) has expanded Nordic ski trail grooming this winter which now includes five Nordic track trail heads with more than 50 km of free trails groomed for skate skiing, classic cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. New this season is Reservoir Hill, Coyote Hill, Turkey Springs, Williams Creek and the Expanded West Fork trail system. PNC’s new grooming equipment provides a smooth wide surface for skate skiing with set tracks for classic cross country skiing.
