The Pagosa Springs Recreation Department is now accepting team registrations for the 2010 adult men’s and women’s basketball leagues.
Staff will accept registrations for men’s recreation league, men’s competitive league and women’s recreation league. However, if there are not at least four teams registered for the women’s league by the deadline, the women’s league will be canceled.
Registration forms are available at the department office in Town Hall; deadline for registering teams in this year’s leagues is Feb. 12. Team registration fees are $250 per team, plus a $30 fee per player.
The leagues are tentatively scheduled to begin in late February. Call the recreation office at 264-4151, Ext. 231 for more information.
Youth basketball games continue tonight in the Ross Aragon Community Center; in the 9-10 division, Maroon faces Gold at 6:15 p.m. and Red plays Navy at 7:10 p.m.
Game schedules are available at the recreation office in Town hall and are also posted in Adobe format on the recreation department page at www.townofpagosasprings.com.

There will be an opportunity for members of the public to view and comment on the proposed design for two whitewater features to be constructed in the Town Park stretch of the San Juan River.
The meeting will be hosted by Riverbend Engineering and the Town of Pagosa Springs, and will be held in the south conference room of the Ross Aragon Community Center Thursday, Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m. All interested parties are encouraged to attend.
Construction of at least one of the proposed features is tentatively slated for this spring, with the possibility of an additional feature being constructed in the fall.
Anyone wishing to view the proposed plans can download them in Adobe format through a link on the recreation department page at www.townofpagosasprings.com.
For more information on this project, call 264-4151, Ext.232.
Thanks to the efforts of the Pagosa Nordic Club, cross-country skiing trails are being groomed regularly on Reservoir Hill, in Town Park and in Yamaguchi Park to offer a variety of Nordic skiing opportunities in downtown Pagosa Springs.

The skate pond at the River Center is open for the season. The hours of operation are from dawn to 10 p.m. every day, except on those nights when ice-maintenance operations are being performed.
Resurfacing will be scheduled for Monday and Thursday evenings unless weather conditions keep the work from taking place. On those nights, the pond will be closed at 6 p.m. A minimum ice thickness of four inches will be regularly monitored, but thin spots can occur, and an effort to mark them with orange safety cones will be made.
Pond users are requested to leave the cones in place. We also ask that no foreign objects be thrown onto the ice. The pond will remain open until safety concerns require its closure. Enjoy the ice.
Christmas tree recycling
The Town of Pagosa Springs is again conducting a Christmas tree recycling program. Trees to be recycled can be dropped off at a newly-designated site at the south end of South Fifth Street any time before the end of March.
Look for the signs directing recyclers to the collection area. The parks department asks that recyclers remove all lights and ornaments before leaving your tree. The Parks Department will chip the collected trees into mulch to be used for landscaping projects during the coming season. Thank you for participating in this worthwhile undertaking.
