A change of shoes can change a life

Bowling shoes will be the fashion statement of the day at the annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake event on Saturday, March 20.

This year’s celebration will be held at Sky Ute Casino and Resort’s Rolling Thunder Lanes in Ignacio.

Bowling teams of four bowlers each will be helping to raise funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters in Archuleta County. Each team member is asked to bring in $80 in donations to be eligible to bowl; that’s asking eight friends for $10 each. All proceeds raised in our community remain in Archuleta County.

This year, there will be a fun twist to the festivities, as the Pagosa bowlers will be bowling alongside Durango’s Big Brothers Big Sisters bowlers. Pagosans are invited to challenge bowlers from Durango to see who can raise the most money. A special prize will be awarded to the winners of the challenge.

Whether or not you are an expert bowler, the fun is in the event itself and knowing that you are helping to support a valuable relationship in a child’s life. Big Brothers Big Sisters in Archuleta County provides mentors, or “Bigs,” for 27 children, or “Littles,” in our community. There is no question that the care of one adult mentor indeed can change a life.

There is no cost to become a Big or Little. The cost to run background and reference checks, interview, and support the match is approximately $1,000 per child per year. Big Brothers Big Sisters depends on the generosity of members of the community and charitable foundations in order to offer this important service to these children. In this strained economic time, these donations are more important than ever.
