Don Weng Geiger
Don Weng Geiger died at home on Dec. 11, 2009, following an extended illness. He was born to American parents on June 15, 1933, in Santiago, The Dominican Republic. He spent his early years in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica.
The family moved to Tampa, Fla., in 1940, He attended Tampa schools, including Henry B. Plant High School, where he was active in sports, journalism and the Honor Society. He was elected president of the Florida State Honor Society prior to graduating in 1951. Don received a B.A. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1955. While at UNC, he was active in student government and several honorary and service societies.
In 1956, he married Donna Dopler of Lake Wales, Fla., who also attended UNC. After college, Don served in the Strategic Air Command of the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1959. Over the course of his career, he worked in labor relations, human resources and industrial relations for Kaiser Steel Corporation, and later Chevron Corporation.
He retired in 1992, and moved with Donna to Pagosa Springs, Colo. Don loved to play golf, and enjoyed a lifelong interest in sports (especially his beloved UNC Tar Heels), history and politics.
Don is survived by his wife Donna; his sons Richard, Mark, Jay and Steven; and grandchildren Kelly, Alana, Dana, Owen and Eric Geiger.
Don requested that donations in his memory be made to the Ruby Sisson Library in Pagosa Springs.
