Parade of Stores features Super Pagosa Package Giveaway

Now, more than ever, is the time to shop Pagosa, and the retail merchants have all the goods for you on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 4 and 5, during the fourth annual Parade of Stores.

To kick off the holiday season, participating local merchants will not only offer a no tax shopping experience, but there will also be store giveaways, open houses, additional discounts, and a new Super Pagosa Package Giveaway.

If you have never participated in the Parade of Stores, know you are missing out on one of Pagosa’s best shopping weekends. This year, merchants will add even more to the shopping experience.

Here is how Parade of Stores works: Approximately 40 merchants throughout Pagosa offer your shopping purchases tax free. You can also pick up a punch card at any of the participating stores. Get your card stamped at the stores on Friday or Saturday — no purchase is necessary; however, you do need to be 18 to enter.

In the past, the commercial community was divided into sections. No more! You can shop all over town and obtain a certain number of punches on your card, allowing you to enter into a drawing. Each store is donating a gift or certificate for the drawing. Cards will be collected and the drawing at each of store will take place Tuesday, Dec. 8.

There is a new giveaway this year: You can redeem your receipts at the Chamber on either Friday or Saturday for purchases made on Dec. 4-5. For every $10 spent at one of the participating stores, you will get one chance to win a Super Pagosa Package.

The more you spend, the more chances you have to enter and win the package. This package includes a stay at the new suite section at The Springs Resort with 24-hour soaking privileges, and also includes restaurant certificates, massages, spa packages, ski passes, gifts and more. What a fabulous Christmas gift for your family or guests.

If you are visiting from out of town, this is the perfect reason to return to Pagosa. Redemption on both days ends at 6 p.m. The winner will be picked on Saturday evening after Santa departs from the Visitor Center and the lighting of the center is complete. The winner will be announced at the Bar D Wranglers concert at the community center Saturday, Oct. 5.

If you have been interested in a larger item such as an HD TV, flooring, furniture or other big purchases, this is the time to buy. Visit the Chamber Web site at to identify participating stores, or pick up a flyer or poster listing the stores. Punch cards are available at participating stores, or at the Chamber.

In this economy, it is imperative we keep our dollars in Pagosa as much as possible. The Pagosa retail merchants offer awesome incentives for residents and neighboring communities to visit Pagosa and shop. If you live in one of our neighboring communities, come and stay in Pagosa, enjoy one of the many events occurring Dec. 4-5, and take advantage of a discount Shop and Stay packages offered by many of our lodging facilities.

The first weekend in December is the time to stay in Pagosa and to shop local. Look for Parade of Stores posters all around town or call the Chamber for more information. Support your retail friends, neighbors and fellow residents this holiday season.

More Christmas events

The events on Dec. 4-5 are numerous, and residents and visitors alike will find it hard to fit everything in. On Friday, Dec. 4, the Festival of Trees returns with some beautifully decorated trees ready-made for you to keep or donate to a needy family. The festivities at the community center begin at 6 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, a silent auction, music and lots of beautiful trees. The auction of the trees raises money for designated non-profits and the trees can be donated to families in need. This is a festive event, with admission only $10.

The Music Boosters present their annual holiday extravaganza with a special show this year: “The Beat Goes On: A Musical Review from 1989-2009.” Come out Dec. 4 and 5 at 7 p.m. or Sunday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. and watch a cast of more than 40 people celebrate fabulous theatrical successes over the years. Tickets can be purchased on line at, or stop by the Chamber and we can assist you.

On Saturday, Dec. 5, after power shopping, drop by the Chamber to see Santa and Mrs. Claus and turn in your receipts to enter to win that Super Pagosa Package. Santa will arrive at the Visitor Center at 3 p.m. There will be hot and cold drinks, cookies, treats for the kids and the opportunity for you to take a great holiday picture, or have one taken for you by Pagosa Photography.

As darkness falls, the Visitor Center becomes a focal point of extraordinary holiday lighting in the downtown area. Santa will kick off the lighting at 5:30 p.m. If all the children’s wishes have not been heard, Santa will stay at the Visitor Center until 6 p.m. before he leaves for visits elsewhere.

Also on Saturday, Dec. 5, the famous Bar D Wranglers return to the Ross Aragon Community Center to present their holiday concert. These Grand Ole Opry performers win the hearts of audiences young and old. The Wranglers will perform at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the community center and at the Chamber.

It is a very busy weekend to kick off the holiday season.

Party ‘Round Pagosa

For the past several years, United Way offered up some unique dinner parties with their “Party ‘Round Pagosa” theme. This year, there will be a new “party” twist. Restaurants around Pagosa have banded together to honor gift certificates you can purchase at the Chamber of Commerce, the PLPOA Recreation Center, and 15 partner United Way agencies. Restaurant-goers can purchase $25 certificates, and the certificates are good for their face value. Restaurants, however, will donate $5 to United Way from each redeemed certificate. This wonderful program is great for Christmas gifts, thank you gifts and as a way to support the community. Stop by the Chamber for more information and a list of partner agencies.

Tools for Business Success

“Tools for Business Success” is now available on the Chamber and AEDA Web sites. “Tools” is chock full of business information. Many groups just went through a funding process with the town and county tourism committees. One of the common denominators was that many of the groups want to send out press releases about their events.

“Tools” has a press release grader where you can cut and paste your press release and see how you rate on information such as contact information, content, jargon, Web links and much more. This grading system is hosted by and is a free service. Go to the Chamber Web site at and click on the “Tools” button at the bottom of the home page. From the “Tools” site, click on the Marketing and Selling sidebar and then “How to Improve Your Press Releases”.

“Tools” contains a significant amount of information about various business practices, forms, and numerous links to access business information. If you would like to see a topic that is not on the Web site, contact the Chamber and we will communicate with the developers. Additions to the Web site occur weekly, so we have a great amount of input. With questions, contact the Chamber at 264-2360.
