Douglas Epps, a new Pagosa Springs resident, flight instructor, and member of the San Juan Flyers flying club, will conduct a Private Pilot Ground School this fall, hosted by the Aviation Venturing Crew program.
The evening class will begin on Thursday Sept. 24, and students will meet weekly from 6 to 9 p.m. for 12 weeks.
The purpose of the class is to prepare the private pilot candidate for the FAA written test for the Private Pilot Airplane rating.
This class is offered at no charge to any high school student or Aviation Venturing Crew member. There will be a $150 charge for adults enrolled in the class. All students will be responsible for purchasing books and other supplies, which will total about $60.
Epps is a commercial/instrument rated pilot who spent six years bush flying in Alaska from 2000 to 2006. He was chief pilot and general manager of a small air taxi in Homer, Alaska. He is also a certificated flight instructor for airplane single and multi-engine land and sea with instrument instruction privileges. He also holds an Advanced Ground Instructor certificate, meaning he is qualified to give ground instruction related to all airman ratings.
