Winston Eugene Perkins died suddenly on Aug. 31, 2009, in Pagosa Springs, Colo., while doing what he loved. Winston was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Aug. 12, 1935. He is survived by his wife, Lavella; two sons, Eric and Lars, children of his first wife; four grandchildren, Jenna Rose, Katrina Lynn, Christian John and Leif Winston; three stepchildren, Jeanna, Glen and Daryl; as well as three step-grandchildren.
Winston attended Brown University from 1953 to 1957 and, upon graduating, served in the Marines before moving briefly to Norway. Upon returning to the United States, he began a 10-year career in marine reinsurance, most prominently with General Reinsurance where he headed the Ocean Marine Department before retiring in 1999. For most of his career, he resided in Ridgefield, Conn., and moved to Pagosa Springs after retiring to escape the hustle and bustle of the Northeast.
Winston was an avid photographer and tennis player who enjoyed hiking in the mountains, traveling and seeing the sights of the world. He loved his cairn terriers and was the proud owner of AKC champions. Winston’s dry sense of humor and generosity were appreciated by all whom he encountered. He enjoyed life to its fullest and will be missed by many. A memorial service was held privately at his home on Saturday, Sept. 5, and another memorial service will be held in Ridgefield, Conn., on Saturday, Sept. 19
Winston’s family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to friends and neighbors for their love and support.
