Mary Lou R. Ortiz, former Pagosa Springs resident, passed away Aug. 15, 2009, in San Diego, Calif. Battling cancer for years beyond diagnosis, she kept strong through her faith, her tenacity and her love for family and friends. She was 53.
Her life was one of celebration, joy and warmth. Her adventurous spirit remained bold and untethered through to her final days.
Mary Lou Rachel Martinez Ortiz was born in Durango, Colo., on Jan. 15, 1956. She moved to California with her family as a small child — always keeping fond memories of her time in southwestern Colorado. After falling in love with Pagosa Springs during a family visit in the early ’90s, she moved promptly from California to find happiness in her new mountain home.
When reflecting upon her life, Mary Lou cherished her role as a mother to her son, Mike Ortiz. She is also survived by her mother, Carmen Martinez; sisters, Adeline Mauga-Trillo and Inez Viera, and her many family members and friends.
