Adult softball ends, youth soccer begins

Youth soccer registration has closed and rosters for all divisions will be finalized before the weekend. Late registrations will be accepted through Friday, but all divisions are now full and late registrants will be placed on a waiting list.

Practices may begin as early as this weekend at the elementary school and Yamaguchi Park fields, and parents who have not heard from a head coach by Aug. 26 should call the recreation office to obtain roster information.

Schedules for all divisions will be available by the end of next week; games will not begin until Sept. 2.

Games will be played Monday through Thursday. There will be no games scheduled on Saturdays unless absolutely needed in order to make up rain-out dates.

Games for the 5-6 and 7-8 divisions have been tentatively scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays at the elementary school soccer fields, while the 9-10 and 11-12 divisions will play Tuesdays and Thursdays at Yamaguchi Park on South 5th Street.

However, since teams from Dulce, N.M. will again be included in the league, local teams in the 5-6 and 7-8 divisions will occasionally play Thursdays against Dulce at the elementary school; the 9-10 and 11-12 divisions will always play Thursdays against Dulce at Yamaguchi Park.

Also, the recreation department is still in need of one volunteer coach for the 5-6 division and one volunteer coach for the 7-8 division. For those interested in coaching the 5-6 division, no previous experience is necessary. For the 7-8 division, coaches with some previous experience or basic knowledge of the game are preferred, but staff will be available to assist those with no experience during the early part of the season, if necessary.

Adult softball

The adult softball season came to a close Saturday, and the recreation department staff would like to congratulate Selph’s Propane (men’s champ) and Radio Shack (coed champ) for earning top honors in their respective tournaments.

Also, we would like to thank all of the players and team spectators for dealing with rainouts, juggling hectic schedules and taking the inevitable hurdles associated with sports programming in stride.

Thanks again to all of you for your continued sportsmanship, dedication and support.

Baseball photos

Coaches and parents who ordered youth baseball photos can contact Jeff Laydon at Pagosa Photography, 264-3686, to arrange pick-up of their orders. The recreation office will provide sponsors with team plaques and photos as soon as they are available.
