Elation Center for the Arts presents a concert of folk, folk rock and ballads with Sammy D from Tennessee, 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Pagosa Lakes Clubhouse.
Raised on a small farm near Nashville, Sammy D is an original Nashville singer/songwriter who has performed his special blend of folk, folk rock and ballads, professionally for many years.
Having just built a cabin in our neck of the woods, he’s now a dual citizen, and we’re taking advantage of his time here — before he goes back to performing in the river city — to have him share his outstanding talents in Pagosa.
A recording artist with several CDs to his credit, Sammy D has been writing songs since he was a teenager. Relating the importance of taking advantage of inspiration when it hits, he said: “You never know when an idea is going to hit you, so you have to have a pen and a paper right beside you. If you don’t, it may leave you forever. It’s good to capture it right then — just to jot down that one line that’s going to fit into a song.”
Folk music and instruments played a big role in Sammy D’s childhood. “I grew up in Nashville,” he said. “My folks listened to the Grand Ole Opry every Saturday night so I was exposed to that type of music for as far back as I can remember. We lived on a farm, right outside of Nashville. We had a little green Philco radio and they would turn it on the Grand Ole Opry. We’d listen to it every Saturday night.”
His family frequently attended music and dance events — for clogging and square dancing — where plenty of talented bluegrass and country musicians were featured.
You can hear samples from Sammy D’s CDs on his Web site: www.sammydwilliams.com/Home_Page.html.
Here’s a sample of his writing taken from his site:
“I believe we must come to an easy understanding
that we are here to help each other along
and in the process, to shed some love and kindness
and for all of our voices, to sing a peaceful song.”
For good songs and thoughtful ballads — with sweet guitar and fine voice —come hear Sammy D from Tennessee.
Advance tickets are $12 and are available online at elationarts.org and at the Higher Grounds Coffee Company. Tickets at the door are $15. Young people 18 and under are admitted free of charge.
