Pagosa golfers compete in couples tourney

Eighteen Pagosa golfers competed in the annual Western Roundup Couples Invitational Golf Tournament hosted by the San Juan Country Club in Farmington, July 18 and 19.

The 72 teams hailed from the Four Corners area, and played a best-ball gross and net format the first day, and a 40-percent net alternate shot the second day. Even though the temperatures topped the century mark both days, several Pagosans prevailed, and won or placed in their respective flights in a very competitive field.

Leslie and Jim Fluharty captured first place net in the Third Flight with a 130.2. Cherry and Mike O’Donnell captured first place gross in the Fourth Flight with a 169; and Kay and Dale Crumpton were fifth place net in the Second Flight with a 131.8.

There was a special putting contest for all the participants Saturday evening. The putting green featured a nine-hole putting course, complete with obstacles, hazards and out-of-bounds. The Crumptons won this event with a scorecard playoff with 16 putts. The O’Donnells were second, also with 16 putts, and Carrie and Dalas Weisz were fifth with 19 putts.

Also participating from Pagosa were Kathy and Mike Giordano, Cindy and Jerry Simpson, Kay and Jerry McKee, Sue Martin and Rich Broom, Jan and Ray Kilgore, and Marilyn and Lee Smart, formerly of Pagosa.
