‘Paper & Clay2’ exhibits work of nationally-recognized ceramic artists

SHY RABBIT Contemporary Arts has extended “Paper & Clay2” through Saturday, Aug. 8, due to its overwhelming popularity. This is one show that you will not want to miss.

This invitational exhibition features 74 original works of art by 14 local and nationally-recognized ceramic artists and printmakers, and has been hailed as one of SHY RABBIT’s most impressive shows to date.

The works on display include a diverse selection of skillfully-crafted functional and sculptural ceramics, in addition a number of highly original hand-pressed prints. This exhibition is free and open to the public.

The “Clay” works on display in “Paper & Clay2” represent the achievement of eleven accomplished ceramists, and include the work of professional artists and art educators currently teaching at various universities throughout the U.S.

The ceramic artists selected by Prof. Brad Schwieger of Ohio University for inclusion in “Paper & Clay2” are: Ben Ahlvers, Kansas; Ingrid Bathe, Maine; Joe Davis, Utah; Hiroe Hanazono, Pennsylvania; Mike Jabbur, New Mexico; Andréa M. Keys, Ohio; Stephanie Lanter, Kansas; Lorna Meaden, Colorado; Frank Saliana, Montana; Steven Schaeffer, Arizona; and Michelle Tobia, Wisconsin.

The “Paper” works on display represent an advancement of the “Reductive Ink”” printmaking process, developed by D. Michael Coffee over the course of the last 20 years.

The printmakers selected by Coffee for inclusion in “Paper & Clay2” are: Juanita Ainsley, Colorado; Sandy Applegate, Colorado; and Christa Laos, Colorado.

Visitors are also invited to attend First Fridays @ SHY RABBIT. These casual open houses run from 4-6 p.m. on the first Friday of every month through September.

SHY RABBIT presents four-six exhibitions annually in its expansive 4,000 square-foot arts center and gallery. Workshops are also offered regularly in ceramics and printmaking, instructed by D. Michael Coffee.

SHY RABBIT continues its 2009 exhibition schedule with the “SHY RABBIT Print National: A National Juried Exhibition,” Aug. 29-Oct. 10.

An artists’ reception will be held Saturday, Aug. 29, from 5-8 p.m.

The juror for this exhibition is Michael D. Barnes, associate professor of art and Head of the Printmaking program at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill., where he has taught since 1998.

Barnes has had more than 20 solo exhibitions since 2000, and has been featured in numerous group exhibitions including Loyola University Museum of Art, Chicago; Davidson Galleries, Seattle; Printworks, Chicago; Koplin Del Rio Gallery, Los Angeles; and the International Print Center, New York.

Barnes’ work is included in many collections, including the Museum of Fine Art, Boston; The Royal Museum of Art, Antwerp, Belgium; the City of Vaasa, Finland; The Plains Art Museum, Fargo, North Dakota; and many University and private collections.

The jurying was difficult due to the high number of exceptional works entered. A total of 308 entries were submitted by artists from throughout the U.S., from which 75 pieces were selected for exhibition.

SHY RABBIT Contemporary Arts: Gallery, Studio and Workshops is located at 333 Bastille Drive, two blocks north of U.S. 160, off of North Pagosa Boulevard.  The facility houses a ceramic studio and fine art gallery, two mixed-media workshops, and two large exhibition spaces.
