Maria Elidia Gallegos went home to be with the Lord Jesus on July 2, 2009, after a prolonged illness. She was born on Feb. 16, 1940, in Lone Tree, Colo. She met and married her lifetime sweetheart, Tony Gallegos, on June 27, 1959. They just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary!
Elidia was a dedicated public servant and retired after 25 years from the postal service. She raised her family in Pagosa Springs, Colo. After retiring, Elidia and Tony moved to Nucla, Colo. Elidia continued to give of herself and worked with the Naturita Junior High school, tutoring disadvantaged children.
Elidia was a loving, Christian woman who continued to give of herself even after she had a debilitating stroke that left her mostly homebound. She reached out to her community through correspondence and prayer chains, and was a dedicated prayer warrior.
Elidia is survived by her four children: Monica Oliviera (Stockton, Calif.), Veronica Gallegos (Albuquerque, N.M.), Albert Gallegos (Pagosa Springs) and Toni Pitts (Maricopa, Ariz.); nine grandchildren — Jessica Pate, Lani Larribas, Jeralyn Oliviera, Daniel Sopiwnik, Jayde Sopiwnik, Matthew Sanders, Tyrell Sanders, William Pitts and Kayla Gallegos; three great-grandchildren, her husband Tony; sister Anna Montoya, of Aztec, N.M.; and brother, Tony Chavez, of Durango, Colo.
Elidia has joined her father, Delfin Chavez, her mother, Isabel Chavez, and two sisters, Marie Montoya and Eufelia Segura, in heaven.
