Members of the High Country Squares recently attended the “Jamboree in the Mountains” at the Vallecito Resort near Durango.
National caller Lee Hailey of Glendale, Ariz., called the dance. Lee is the most interesting caller we have danced with; his unusual calls include six couples in a square, square dancing in a line formation, and our favorite — Hailey’n Mutation, where members of one square move into other squares for a while, but always end up with the same four couples back together in their original square. It was truly a fun evening.
Lake Vallecito Resort has square dances every Saturday night throughout the summer with local callers from Pagosa Springs, Durango, Cortez and Farmington. They also offer round dancing lessons.
The High Country Squares have been offering beginner lessons since June 1. We have had a wonderful turnout of new dancers and everyone seems to be having a lot of fun. Jim Park is doing a splendid job of teaching the square dance steps and we are now closing this beginner class to only those who have been attending, so we can move more quickly through the list of Mainstream Dance Steps. If you are a square dancer who needs to brush up on your Mainstream Steps, you are welcome to join us any time.
