The No Boundaries-Experiments in Pastel workshop is taught by Lorraine Trenholm and will be held Thursday, July 16, and Friday July 17, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day, with a half-hour break.
The cost of the workshop is $150 for PSAC members and $175 for nonmembers, plus a $25 materials fee. You will need to bring a lunch.
This is a new workshop for artists who would like to experiment with materials and methods to help “break out of our mold” when we create our pastel paintings. This is an opportunity for each of you to free yourself from the bonds of convention, to push the edges of your creativity, to stretch your wings and fly.
We will test the limits of our paper, our materials and our imaginations!
Each day, we’ll begin with an introduction of materials and methods, including creating textured paper and applying gold leaf. Then we’ll proceed to “hands on” experimenting and the application to each person’s own work.
Born in New York where she lived until completing studies as a painting major at Pratt Institute, Lorraine has painted and drawn throughout her life. She painted and showed her art on Cape Cod ,depicting that area, in the Southwest, with pastels, oils and collage. She helped found the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod and was juried in as a Signature Member its first year.
A member of “21 in Truro,” Chatham Creative Arts Center, Pastel Society of N.M. and a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of Colorado, she has won numerous awards and participated in several one-woman shows. Her work has been published in Lois Griffel’s “Painting the Impressionist Landscape” and Kennedy Publishing’s “Best of America-Pastel Artists and Artisans, Vol 1.”

The Ruby M. Sisson Library and the Pagosa Springs Arts Council are pleased to jointly present Salon Supplémentaire in parallel with the Juried Exhibition. PSAC invites you to explore the diverse work in both of these shows.
Home and Garden Tour
The 2009 Home and Garden Tour sponsored by Pagosa Springs Arts Council will take place Sunday, July 12, from noon to 4 p.m.
The four homes on the tour are exquisite, artistically unique and coordinated with nature in totally individual styles. Featured at the homes will be miniature artworks, dish gardens and hanging floral baskets that will be for sale, with proceeds going to PSAC. Hors d’ouevres will be provided at one of the homes and desserts at another. Tickets are available at the Chamber, Higher Grounds and Town Park Gallery. Directions will be included with each ticket. For more information call PSAC, 264-5020.
Watercolor Portraits with Pierre Mion
Pierre Mion is teaching one of his rare portrait classes this summer. These classes are fun and relaxed with no high pressure. You will receive a lot of personal attention and beginners are more than welcome. There will be photos and sketches for each student of the two subjects we will paint. You may also bring a photo of your choice for the second portrait. The workshop will be held July 20-22, 2009 with an optional fourth day on July 23. The price is $240 for PSAC members or $265for nonmembers. The extra $25 pays for a one-year membership in PSAC. The cost of the optional fourth day is $65.
Register early; the class is limited to 10 students. Call Pierre at 731-9781 for information and a list of art supplies. All classes will be held in the Arts and Crafts Room of the community center from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please bring your own lunch.
An old friend of Pierre’s from Chevy Chase, Md., is coming out to Pagosa Springs to take this workshop. She is 85 years old and they have been friends for 47 years.
The PSAC Gallery in Town Park is open Tuesday through Sunday noon to 4 p.m. You can also visit our Web site at www.pagosa-arts.com for additional information.
Plein Air Painters
Plein Air Painters meet at 10 a.m. on the third Thursday of the month at a predetermined location. On July 16, we will meet at the Piedra River picnic area. Drive north on Piedra Road until the road crosses the river (approximately 25 minutes from U.S. 160). There is a picnic area with tables and restrooms on the right side of the road.
Painters who work in any media are welcome. It’s a wonderful opportunity to share tips, ideas and resources. If the weather is nice, we paint outdoors. If the weather is bad we will paint in the community center Arts and Crafts Room. Please keep in mind that turpentine-based painting materials cannot be used in the Community Center. Call Kayla, 731-9100, if you need more information.
