Pagosa Country’s unsung heroes
Wednesday, July 22, 2009

I would like to pay tribute to some of our local “unsung hero” veterans.

These are the individual local veterans who have offered to assist other local veterans with their transportation needs to VAHC appointments.

I can’t express enough thanks to those individuals for the wonderful volunteer job they do to help fellow veterans. I can typically pick up the phone and ask any one of them if they can transport a veteran to his VAHC appointment for me. They are always willing to step up to the plate and assist the veteran in need.

Among the current volunteers are Bob Albright, Robert Chavez, Gabe Hendricks, Bill Weiland, Tom Marschall, Loyd Dinwiddie, James Miner, Tommy Blankenship, Carlton Foe and John Clay.

There have been many others over the years, all of whom have unselfishly given of their time and even their own money at times, to help with this important function.

To all of you, please accept a great big thank you!

Archuleta County is a retirement community and many of our veterans are aging and experiencing failing health. This service to our fellow veterans is much needed help for some of those less fortunate.

If you would like to volunteer for this program, give this office a call. We have vehicles and money to pay for the trip where needed. Some of the trips involve overnight stays in Albuquerque.
