Shawn Steen

Shawn Steen, M.D., 1995 graduate of Pagosa Springs High School, has just completed his five-year surgical residency at the Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.

Dr. Steen was honored with the eighth Ralph R. Tompsett Writing Award after co-publishing three articles in “Proceedings” in 2008: “Acute gastric dilation and ischemia secondary to small bowel obstruction,” “Circulating tumor cells in melanoma: a review of the literature and description of a novel technique” and “Current treatment of soft tissue sarcoma.” He received other recent awards as well, including a Best Paper Award from the North Texas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.

Shawn and his wife, Dr. Jenny Sochar Steen, are relocating to Santa Monica, Calif., where Shawn has been accepted into a surgical oncology fellowship at the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John’s Health Center. This leading cancer research institute is dedicated to the understanding and curing of cancer through innovative clinical and laboratory research and the education of the next generation of surgical oncologists and scientists.
