The Weminuche Audubon Society will hold its second annual meeting at the Pagosa Springs Community Center from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 17. Activities will include the election of a partial Board of Directors, member appreciation dinner and silent auction to benefit the society.
From 6 to 7 p.m., National Audubon Society members current for at least 60 days will select four directors to fill pending board vacancies through May 2011. Once seated, the full board will choose specific officers, but the positions with terms about to expire include the chapter vice president, secretary and two directors at large.
Now entering its second year, the chapter originally staggered board terms to avoid having to elect an entire slate every other year. From this month forward, while elections will be held each June, only three or four slots will expire at any given time. Effective Wednesday, the duration of all terms will be two years.
Though a couple of members have stepped forward, additional volunteers are needed to fill upcoming vacancies. Interested adult members should contact Mike Ward at 731-9151, or voice intent at the start of Wednesday’s meeting. Non-members may join the society for just $20 a year and become instantly qualified (ask about other membership benefits). Customarily, floor nominations will also be accepted.
Also between 6 and 7 p.m., Eddie B. Cookin’ will cater a member appreciation dinner at no cost to members and just $10 per non-member. Of course, non-members may elect to join Audubon and participate in the meal for free. Anyone not planning to attend the dinner may chose to arrive around 7 p.m. The society will provide wine, beer, coffee and assorted soft drinks all evening long, as those consuming alcohol must be 21 years of age, or older.
Following the election and dinner, chapter leaders will present a brief history of Audubon in Pagosa Country, and discuss a Weminuche Audubon Society year-in-review. Attention will then turn toward upcoming goals and what outdoor events the membership would like to see in the months to come.
Bids for a silent auction to benefit the chapter will be taken throughout the evening, with high bids being announced near meeting’s end.
