Disabled veterans can apply for property tax exemption

Disabled Archuleta County veterans intent on seeking a property tax exemption for 2009 have until July 1 to file the appropriate paperwork with the state.

As part of Senate Bill 09-276, the legislation eliminated the homestead property tax exemption for qualifying seniors, but left the homestead property tax exemption for disabled veterans intact.

For disabled veterans who qualify, 50 percent of the first $200,000 of actual value of the veteran’s primary residence is exempted. The state will reimburse the county treasurer for the lost revenue.

Owners of multiple residences may only designate one property as their primary residence.

The exemption became effective Jan. 1, 2007, on property tax bills sent beginning in 2008.
