Hospital acquires local artist’s work

Pagosa Mountain Hospital is very proud to announce the acquisition of “Market Basket 9” by local artist Sandy Applegate. The piece was purchased through the Pagosa Mountain Hospital Arts Fund.

The Market Basket series is based on an everyday experience — shopping for produce. According to Applegate, “The combination of shapes, sizes and colors of fruits and vegetables can be very exciting and dramatic. I set up outdoor still life scenes in sunlight, using a variety of produce to use as models for my paintings.”

Some of these paintings are created with colored pencils, which allow Applegate to produce images of dense, intense, and luscious color. The watercolor paintings are much larger in order to emphasize the “produce world’s” command of space. The hospital’s Market Basket 9 is a watercolor painting.

The Pagosa Springs Arts Council and Pagosa Mountain Hospital held a juried art exhibit Sept. 18-28, 2008, where the public was given the opportunity to purchase various pieces of artwork. The Arts Council generously donated 10 percent of artists’ sales from this exhibit to Pagosa Mountain Hospital to create the Arts Fund. There was also a donation box available for additional contributions to the Arts Fund, of which the hospital received 10 percent. All pieces purchased through these donations will become part of the permanent collection at the hospital. Applegate’s “Market Basket 9” is the first piece of art purchased by the hospital.

Anyone can donate to the Pagosa Mountain Hospital Arts Fund. For further information or to make a donation, please contact: Kelly Johnson 731-9545 (e-mail kjohnson@usjhd.org) or mail to Dr. Mary Fisher Foundation PO Box 3805 Pagosa Springs, CO  81147.
