America the Beautiful: the Rotary Fourth of July Parade

America the Beautiful.

What a wonderful image that creates in one’s mind as we begin making preparations for one of Pagosa’s most celebrated and enjoyed events: the annual Rotary Fourth of July Parade.

Remembering my first parade here in Pagosa 14 years ago, I recall it was one of the most thrilling and heart warming events my family and I had enjoyed in many years. Even now, as family has moved and expanded, it is an event that draws everyone back home to enjoy the closeness that a hometown event can produce.

This year’s theme, America the Beautiful, is one that takes in so many ideas. With all that is occurring in the world, and especially in our own country, this year’s theme gives each citizen an opportunity to reflect on and magnify what our beautiful country represents to them, and to their group or organization, as they prepare their entry.

We are expecting an even greater number of entries this year than in years past, and encourage everyone to get applications in as soon as possible.?

Applications are available at the Chamber of Commerce or you can download the application directly from The SUN Web site,

The parade committee is encouraging all entrants to decorate their floats in accord with the theme and with appropriate Fourth of July decorations. Have fun and be creative! This is our big opportunity to celebrate the blessings we enjoy in this great country of ours.

As a reminder from the parade committee, no items may be thrown or handed from the entries along the parade route, and no spraying of water into the crowds will be allowed. Participants who are walking with an entry can hand out items in the vicinity of their floats. Candy may be handed out only after a float has passed the Bell Tower. These rules are made for safety reasons, since the traffic on the north side of the parade route is still in motion between South 8th Street and the Bell Tower.

Pagosa, put on your creative thinking caps and get your applications in. We look forward to one of Pagosa’s most celebrated and enjoyable events of the year.
